You won’t need the oratory – just the process.

Charismatic leaders follow a surprisingly similar process to promote change. You can use it in conversation with your team or community.

First, acknowledge the values or beliefs you share. (Maybe, to feel proud of the work you all do.)

Next, tell them why it’s essential to change by showing that their beliefs or values are under threat. (Maybe, ‘Other organisations are showing that we’re inefficient, locked into old ways.’)

Now, offer them hope with a vivid picture of what you can all do to live up your team’s values. Always use inclusive language, so we and us - not you and I. And, build their trust by your own example.

The skill lies in using charismatic techniques in natural ways. If they say, 'You know, you sound just like Martin Luther King', you'll know you need a lighter touch.
